June is an important month for two reasons. It’s both Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month and Pride Month. Both of these celebrate the rich, and sometimes difficult histories of the communities and people that are part of those identities.
\nWe are currently funded to support young LGBT+ Romani (Gypsy), Roma, Welsh, Scottish and Irish Travellers.
\nWhy is this work important?
\nFor the majority of LGBT+ Romani (Gypsy), Roma, Welsh, Scottish and Irish Traveller young people, it can be difficult to come to terms with their identity. They may experience challenges when exploring their sexuality and gender identity whilst trying to balance their life within their community. Some young people experience discrimination, isolation or feeling like they have to hide who they are to fit in.
\nThe Traveller Movement believes that it’s important that young people know they don’t have to choose between being both LGBT+ and part of their community.
\nConfidentiality
\nIf you are a LGBT+ Romani (Gypsy), Roma, Welsh, Scottish and Irish Traveller young person, you may feel concerned that if you contact us you could risk being outed. We want to assure you that this will never be the case. The Traveller Movement is a registered charity, and is bound by strict data protection laws and common law duty of confidence. The law requires that information shared in confidence remains private, unless the person agrees otherwise, unless there is a safety issue.

But there are lots of us out there, you’re not alone. Since coming out, I’ve realised that people surprise you every day, and the most traditional members of your family might shock you and be there for you. It’s not an easy road, but when you’re on the other side you’ll be so glad that you fought for the life that you deserve. My best advice is to keep yourself safe, have people that you can talk to and that will help you if things start to feel really heavy. Keep going, there are people out there that will love and accept every part of your identity.”
