Standing at the Edge of Ordinary

This month, we’re celebrating a powerful new voice in Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller literature: Lisa-Marie Ainley, whose new book ‘Standing at the Edge of Ordinary’ has just been released. The book is a Victorian romance about widow Harriet Blackthorn, who defies society’s expectations and finds love with a man whose past could destroy them both. A story of resilience, scandal, and courage in 1850s England.

Lisa-Marie Ainley and Her New Book ‘Standing at the Edge of Ordinary’

This month, we’re celebrating a powerful new voice in Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller literature: Lisa-Marie Ainley, whose new book ‘Standing at the Edge of Ordinary’ has just been released. The book is a Victorian romance about widow Harriet Blackthorn, who defies society’s expectations and finds love with a man whose past could destroy them both. A story of resilience, scandal, and courage in 1850s England.

At the Traveller Movement, we’re passionate about amplifying Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller voices, especially in the arts and literature where our communities are too often underrepresented. Lisa-Marie Ainley’s work is a testament to the strength of storytelling.

Our Community Advocacy Caseworker, Liv Hammond, had the opportunity to ask Lisa-Marie some questions about her new book.

Q: What inspired you to write ‘Standing at the Edge of Ordinary’?

It was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time because I’m an avid reader. I started it a long time ago. Deep down all of us have this need to prove that we’re something more than people see us as, because lots of people see Travellers as being unable to achieve anything.

Q: How does your identity and heritage influence your writing?

My identity and heritage massively influences my writing. The book is based in Victorian society, and Travellers are still facing a lot of the issues now, that the protagonist in the book faces.

Q: What message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

To have the courage to be themselves without worrying about their reputation or what society thinks of them.

Q: What was the biggest challenge in getting your book published?

I actually self-published, so the biggest challenge was learning how to do it! The publishing side is almost like running a business, so I had to do a lot of online learning about marketing and how to get my book out there.

Q: What advice would you give to young Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller writers starting out?

Pour your heart out on the paper, and give it a go. Don’t be afraid to do it even though it can be quite daunting, it can feel like you’re revealing a lot but my advice would be to just do it.

Representation in literature really matters. Seeing more Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller names in print is so important. Lisa-Marie’s journey from writing her debut novel to reaching the top 10 in Amazon’s 100 Bestseller’s List is nothing short of inspirational, and we’re sure it will encourage many others to follow their passion too. Well done Lisa-Marie, we can’t wait to see what comes next!
