Hi, my name is Jimmy Doherty and I’m an Irish Traveller from London. I recently began my internship at The Traveller Movement in October.
Because of my older brother Charlie previously having been an intern at The Traveller Movement, I have gained a lot of knowledge about the organisation. Due to having pre-existing relationships with most of his colleagues, my first day was easier than I thought it would be.
Since starting, I’ve completed a youth influencers course and made TikTok’s about the work that goes on at Traveller Movement. I’ve also been supporting with administrative duties and undertaking risk assessments for events. As part of the youth advisory group, I co-hosted one of the organisation’s Connected Communities events. In November, we hosted the Traveller Movement annual conference in Lambeth Town Hall, and I was trusted with the responsibility of co-chairing the event alongside Pauline Anderson OBE. As co-chair, I developed my public speaking skills, and it was great experience.
Separate to my internship, I have also enrolled in a creative media course at my college due to my passion for filmmaking. I made this decision because I wish to represent Irish Travellers in the media and hopefully in a positive light. I believe that working with The Traveller Movement will give me a deeper understanding and an improved perspective of Irish Travellers than I already have.
