On 30 September, community leaders, advocates and practitioners will come together for an important conversation about cultural competency, inequality and representation within the justice system.

Too often, the experiences of Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller communities, alongside other marginalised groups, are overlooked in conversations about justice, policy and public services. Yet these communities continue to face significant barriers in accessing fair treatment, trusted support and meaningful representation.

The upcoming webinar, “Your Community in Justice”, will provide a platform for those voices to be heard, bringing together people with lived experience, grassroots expertise and professional insight to explore how the justice system can better understand and serve all communities.

Why This Conversation Matters

The justice system touches every aspect of society, but not everyone experiences it equally. Community organisations and advocates have consistently highlighted how cultural misunderstandings, institutional bias and a lack of representation can contribute to poorer outcomes for marginalised communities.

For Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller communities, mistrust of institutions, underrepresentation and experiences of discrimination can create additional challenges when engaging with legal and criminal justice processes. Similar concerns are shared by many other communities whose perspectives are often absent from policy discussions and service design.

Improving cultural competency is not simply about awareness. It is about ensuring that professionals understand the backgrounds, experiences and realities of the people they serve. This understanding can help build trust, improve engagement and contribute to more equitable outcomes.
