About us

Working with and for Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Traveller communities across the UK to end discrimination and advance equality.

The Traveller Movement is a national UK charity working with and for ethnic Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish, Scottish and Welsh Traveller people to end discrimination and advance equality.

Our Mission and Impact

We exist so that Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish, Scottish and Welsh Traveller people are recognised as ethnic minorities, celebrated for their cultural heritage, and empowered to lead change. We work across the UK to challenge the discrimination that denies these communities equal access to education, health, justice and housing, and we back our advocacy with evidence that influences national policy.

Equality for All

We challenge what has been called the “last acceptable form of racism”, the persistent discrimination against Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish, Scottish and Welsh Traveller people in Britain today. Through strategic legal action, public campaigning and policy advocacy, we hold institutions to account and push towards lasting systemic change.

Community-Led Advocacy

Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish, Scottish and Welsh Traveller people know best their needs. We embed community voices at every level of our work, from our frontline services to our Board of Trustees. Our Advisory Group ensures that policy discussions are shaped by the lived experience of the communities they affect.

Strategic Impact

We build the case for change through rigorous community-based research, parliamentary briefings and policy recommendations. Our evidence has directly shaped legislation on hate crime reporting, school exclusions, health equity and accommodation rights.  We work across a range of services including local councils, police forces and NHS trusts to turn policy into practice on the ground.

What we do

The Traveller Movement operates with a “bottom-up” approach.

Our frontline work informs our national policy recommendations, ensuring that the lived experiences of the community are heard in the halls of power.

Our pillars of priority

We work across four key pillars, addressing key areas that are priorities for our community

Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish, Scottish and Welsh Traveller Identity & Rights

Education for Change

Health Equity & Inclusion

Rights, Protection & Advocacy

Our Story

Founded in 1999 as the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain, we expanded our remit in 2008 to include Romani (Gypsy) and Roma people. Today, we are proud to be a partnership of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community members and settled allies working together.

Our Patrons and Trustees, Advisory Board and team are primarily people from the communities we serve, ensuring that our work remains authentic, inclusive, and effective.
