In 2011 Gypsies and Irish Travellers were first included as ethnic minority groups in the National Census resulting in the ONS conducting a dedicated analysis of data relating to these groups in 2014. Gypsies and Irish Travellers are ethnic minorities and have a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. They are protected from race discrimination and by the Public Sector Equality Duty.
